Artists came to Rue de Fleurus to see “Woman with a Hat,” including the little-known Picasso, who responded by painting his own audacious portrait of Gertrude that took its place on the walls.īoth Stein households began regularly opening their doors on Saturdays nights to anyone interested, with Sarah and Michael becoming the champions of Matisse while Gertrude aligned herself with Picasso. Leo’s decision to buy it (and Sarah and Michael’s immediate regret that they hadn’t followed with the quick acquisition of other Matisses) marks the family’s shift to the truly avant-garde. All four Steins went together to the opening of the Salon d’Automne in 1905, where they were fascinated by Matisse’s riotously painted “Woman with a Hat,” which critics derided as scandalous.
